La Piedad Sculpture by Juan de Ávalos is located in the Valley of the Fallen. La Piedad is approximately six meters high, nine wide and three deep. With a weight of between one hundred twenty and one hundred and fifty tons. The Sculpture shows Christ in the arms of the Virgin, whose serene face reveals great suffering and sadness at the death of her son. The Virgin clings to the lifeless hand of the dead Christ and holds her head, which falls back along with the hair, resting part of the body on the ground. Particularly noteworthy are the torso and right arm of Christ, whose pose is markedly naturalistic and detailed in regards to human anatomy, contrasting in turn with the folds of the tunic and the veil of the Virgin.
