Description
Covadonga is a population of Asturias in Spain and the famous battle of Covadonga took place.
The Battle of Covadonga in 722 took place between the army of Don Pelayo and troops of Al-Andalus, they were defeated this military action is considered as the start of the Reconquista.
Ruled northern Spain from a Berber called Munuza Gijon, whose authority was challenged by the Asturian leaders meeting in Cangas de Onis in 718 led by Pelayo, decided to rebel by refusing to pay taxes imposed, the kharaj and jizya. After some punitive actions by local Arab troops, Munuza requested the intervention of reinforcements from Córdoba. Although importance will detract from what was happening in the Iberian end, I was worth Ambasa sent in command of Al Qama a Saracen Expeditionary Force in any case likely to reach the figure of 180,000 men given by Christian chronicles.
As the forces of Pelayo, the recent historiography quantified in just over 300 fighters. With them waited Muslims in a strategic location, as the narrow valley of Cangas of the Picos de Europa the bottom closes the mountain Auseva where an orderly attacker does not have room to maneuver and loses effectiveness the number and organization could grant. There, in 722, there was a confrontation, whose size is unknown and could be a battle or a simple skirmish. The point is that the Saracen troops were decimated, forcing Munuza escape Gijon, where he was at that time. He could not escape the Muslim governor because he and his troops were killed. A hundred men, commanded by Pelayo, had occupied the famous cave of Covadonga, attacking from there to the Moorish troops bewildered. Al Qama found death on this occasion, while his forces suffered heavy losses in their disorderly flight, falling upon them a hillside due to a landslide, probably caused near Cosgaya Cantabria.
The Battle of Covadonga was the first victory of a rebel contingent against Muslim forces and allowed the kingdom will return to be attacked. Was widely disseminated in the later historiography as a trigger for the establishment of an organized insurrection that eventually led to the founding, in principle, the independent kingdom of Asturias, and other Christian kingdoms culminating in the formation of the Kingdom of Spain.
In the Holy Cave the tombs of the kings of Asturias are:
• Don Pelayo
• Alfonso I, the Catholic.
